Not many times in our lives has the phrase “There’s no place like home” been more meaningful than this week. This week is our home/sending church’s missions conference. We can not even begin to tell you what a blessing our pastor and our church is to us.
Let me just share with you some of the ways our home church has loved on us this week. They took Julia and the other missionary wives out yesterday for a day of pampering – they went shopping, bought several new outfits, got her hair done, etc. Today, they took our children out to “Monkey Joe’s.” (an indoor inflatable playground, that our kids LOVE!) Tomorrow, they are taking the men out for golf! Every night the folks here have been great, talking us out to eat, and making sure our needs are met.
One of the things that our pastor did for us that really shows his commitment to us, is that he is bringing up our team leader, Gary Hale, from the Dominican to preach Sunday. This will allow the church to meet him and see his heart for the Dominican people. I do not know a lot of pastors that would do something like that for their church and missionary. He is really behind what we are doing! In fact, when we told him that we were fortunate to have a pastor and church that was behind us, he said that he didn’t want to be “just behind us” . . . he wanted to be in front of us, behind us, beside us, under us, over us, in other words all around us! That is the kind of church and pastor we have and we could not be more thankful.
We also have had a huge outpouring of support from the individual church members. Many have expressed a true desire to help us in any way they can. Many have offered to pray, watch our children, give their time, share church contacts, etc. One member in specific approached us and told us the Lord impressed on his heart to support us above and beyond their regular missions giving for $100 a month! I don’t know about you, but $100 a month is a lot of money to me, and we could not be more humbled by this family that we have gone to church with for 6 years, sacrificing to help us get to the mission field and spread the gospel to the Dominican people.
All this, and the week is only half over . . . Can’t wait to see what the rest of the week holds! There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home!
