It was great to see our mission board director, Doug Hodges, on Tuesday. It “just so happened” (if you don’t believe in Divine Providence) that this week, there was a pastor’s conference going on at my father-in-law’s church, where a pastor from the Dominican was on of the guest speakers.
Doug and I went Tuesday afternoon to meet with this pastor, who’s name is Josue (Ho-shway) Raimundo. Even though it was the first time they had ever met, it was great to hear Doug and Josue talk like they were old friends. They knew many of the same people in the Dominican, and sat and told stories about the Lord’s work in the DR.
At one point in the conversation, Doug brought up the name of one of his old friends, an independent baptist pastor in Santo Domingo. You could see Josue’s countenance sober immediately, as he said with his thick Dominican accent, “Oh, brother Doug, you have not heard? He has fallen. . . his church members found out that he is a drunkard, and he has since left his wife.” Doug was visibly shaken by the news as he had co-labored with the man to reach that sin stricken land with the gospel.
All I could think of during their sad exchange of words, was that this is exactly why the Lord has called us to go to the Dominican. There is such a need! May Eze 22:30 never be true of the DR! “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.”
May the Lord raise up Dominicans to stand in the gap!!!
May the Lord use us to facilitate this calling!!!!
