“Come unto Me . . .”

Have you ever been so burdened by something that you can’t sleep?  Maybe the next day you had a big test at school, or a big meeting at the office.  Maybe it was a death in the family or someone you loved was ill.  Maybe it was a big decision you had to make, or maybe you were worrying about something that you CantSleepYethad no control over.  Whatever the reason, I am sure we have all been there before, lying there, silent and still, but we just cannot turn our brains off.  Several times our little girl, Chloe, has come into our room after I put her to bed, and when I ask her why she is not sleeping, her reply is: “Daddy, my head is not sleepy!”

So many things can cause us not to sleep.  Sometimes when our bodies are telling us to sleep, our minds just won’t cooperate!  This is what happened to one of our friends this week as he fought a spiritual battle with the Devil.

Most of you know our friend Melissa who moved here last fall to teach in the school.  She has become friends with a guy named Francisco.  (Franci for short)  Franci has also become one of our good friends and is one of the most genuinely nice guys you could ever meet.  He loves our kids, and has on several occasions told me that any time I need anything, to give him a call.  He is a really, really nice guy.  The problem is that, really, really nice guys don’t get into Heaven based on the fact that they are really, really nice.  Franci has been coming to church over the past couple of months, and has been coming to that very conclusion.  He knew that there was something missing in his life.  Growing up here in the DR with a Roman Catholic background, he knew many stories from the Bible, his mother taught him to be a good person, and he even knew who Jesus Christ was, but he never established a personal relationship with Him. . . Well, I say never . . . never, until TODAY!!!!!!  Yep, that’s right!  Today, Pastor Gary preached on the Person of Jesus Christ, and that our hope is not in the law or being a good person, but rather, our hope is in the Person of Jesus Christ.  At the invitation, Franci jumped out of his seat and headed out to talk with Yensi, our youth pastor, about his need for Christ.

IMG_7100After he came out of the office, Franci told me that he felt “lighter”!  He went on to say that he couldn’t wait to go to bed tonight.  You see, he had not been sleeping all week because he knew he needed to be saved.  I thought that was awesome that he realized that because he had finally given his life to Christ, that he would finally be able to sleep peacefully tonight.  I am so excited for Franci, and I am so excited to watch him continue to grow in the Lord!

As we were talking, I could not help but recite:  Matthew 11:28-30  “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

The Devil was out to destroy Franci, but he did not win the battle because Fanci decided to heed the words of The Lord when he says in I Peter 5:7-8 “Casting ALL your care upon Him; for He careth for you.  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Next time that you “can’t sleep”, let me challenge you to recite these verses and “cast ALL your cares upon Him” and let the Meek and Lowly Savior give you rest.  The best pill there is for insomnia is the “Gospill”  That’s right, forget all the pills, home remedies, and counting of sheep.  Next time you can’t sleep, give all of your worries, problems, and cares over to God and let Him give you the rest he promises to give when you give it ALL to Him!

Notice:  I put the word “ALL” in caps.  It does not work if you hold on to some of your problems and burdens.  Jesus wants them ALL. . . That is when He WILL give you rest.
