Jesus loves me

Most if not all of us grew up singing that familiar little song. . . “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.  Little ones to Him belong, they are weak, but He is strong.  Yes Jesus loves me, Yes Jesus loves, Yes Jesus loves me . . . The Bible tells me so.”

While I love that song, and totally agree with the lyrics, I do not think that song tells the whole story.  If your husband/wife (significant other) jesus-loves-mealways told you they loved you, and even wrote notes and letters about how much they loved you, but never actually showed you that they loved you, then their love wouldn’t be very real would it?  If they never did anything that made you feel special or never had any outward manifestations of their love for you, then at some point wouldn’t you start questioning that love?

Well, I for one, am glad that Jesus’ love does not work that way.  He not only tells us about His love for us, He also shows His love for us.  Let me give you a simple example of how that happened to me the other day.

As most of you know, we are in the States right now, working on some Visa papers so that we can continue working and living in the Dominican Republic.  In our planning for the trip, we scheduled to visit a couple of our supporting churches in Florida before we continued on to Tennessee.  As we were looking into prices for flights and rental cars, we stumbled across an almost unbelievable deal on a rental car.  Since many people drive rental cars into FL and drop them off there, the rental car companies are currently offering ridiculous deals to people that are picking up the car in FL, and dropping it off in another state.  Well, that was perfect for us!  We found that they were offering anywhere from Compact to Full Sized cars for $9 a day with no destination fee.  If you have ever rented a car and dropped it off in a different location, then you know just how good of a deal this is.  As we looked over the website, we found that they were also offering Convertibles for the same price.

Now maybe it is the Motor Ribbet collageCity blood that runs through my veins, or maybe it’s just a “guy thing,” but I have always wanted to drive a convertible.  More than likely it can be attributed to the fact that my mom and dad sold their electric blue with a white racing stripe, ’68 convertible, Camaro when they found out they were going to have a baby boy.  They traded it in on a ’74 yellow Monte Carlo that looked like a huge banana.  As I now approach the ripe old age of 40, I can say that I have NEVER even driven a convertible, much less owned one, and it has always been a dream of mine, but to this point. . . unattainable.

So when I saw that the rental companies had CONVERTIBLES for the same price as those normal, run of the mill, full-sized cars, I was beaming!  But then I remembered that I have 3 lovely children with booster seats, and several pieces of luggage.  After some deep soul searching, and a lesson on reality from my lovely wife, I reluctantly selected the “Full-Size” option on the website, and we ended up with an Impala . . . stark white. . . average looking. . . lacking any real style, BUT it got the job done and toted my little family and our luggage up to Tennessee without any problems.

You might say, “Wait a minute, I thought ‘Jesus loved you’?”  “Why didn’t you get to drive the convertible?”  Well, this is where Paul Harvey would say “Stay tuned for . . . the rest of the story”

One of our supporting pastors asked us if we would come back to FL on the weekend of the 25th-27th because it was their VBS week, and they wanted to use us as the missionaries of the week.  It was the only weekend that we had not already scheduled something for, so we agreed to come.  I knew it was going to be a long drive for the kids, so we started to look into different options.  Julia’s sister volunteered to watch the kids if we wanted to just go back by ourselves.  After talking to the pastor, he said that was fine, and so we started to look into cheap ways to get to Tampa.  We looked into buses, car rentals, flights, etc, and finally found something that would be perfect!  We got $75 one-way airline tickets into FL, and guess what else?  Yep, that’s right, they still had the deals on the CONVERTIBLES!!  Not only did I get to drive my convertible for the weekend, the kids at VBS brought in over $1,600 in offering for the week to help us with our Visa process!!

Jesus Loves Me!!  What has He done lately to show His love for you?  Count your blessings!!  Jesus loves His children!!
